RESULTS OF THE 2011 EDITION OF THE NIAGARA COUNTY BULLHEAD CONTEST

There were 105 contestants !

Here are the winners: 1st 2nd & 3rd were cash payout prizes after expenses. [50/30/20]

First place - Jeff Budziszewski – Newfane NY. -Total weight - 3.72 lbs.
Second place – Joel Feagin – Lockport NY - Total weight – 3.32 pounds
Third place - John Pittsley – Lockport NY-Total weight 3.22 pounds

Other lesser prize winners were:
4.] Cameron McKee – 3.07
5.] Mark Gertz – 3.00
6.] Shawn Galyan – 3.00
7.] Eric Hyjek – 2.92
The lesser prizes were cap lights. [A light that clips on the edge a baseball cap for night fishing] Of the fish weighed in only two per entrant were allowed. All weights listed are the totals of the two fish. Scales were the electric digital scales borrowed from Niagara County, the same scale used in the county derbies.

Fish were caught from all over. Lots of fishing concentration was at 12 Mile Creek West, right at the mouth to the lake also at the inner end of the Wilson piers. Some fish entered were caught at Duck Island in Gill Creek, Niagara Falls.

There were quite a few fish brought to the weigh-in and most were kept by the anglers and what wasn’t kept was taken home to cook by a Wilson Conservation Club member.

We relied heavily on our volunteers of Chris J., [dog cooker] Dave Astasia, [chili cooker] Terry Swann, [club liaison, photos] Delma Daul, [salad maker & go-fer] - Debbie, Ellen & another lady from the Wilson Conservation Club who sold 50/50 tickets. Oh, of course Pete’s wife Wendy kept everything organized and made the baked beans. Our weigh master Richard Fortier kept the weigh-in and winners sheets in order there.

Quite a few parents got their children out and that was something that made our day. We had a box of Thinsulate winter children’s caps that were donated by Captain Frank Campbell to give away to the tiny kids. All the tiny kids got one, and Feather & Fur Bait Shop gave away fishing stuff to what kids were left.

Again the Wilson Conservation Club opened their doors for us to have our awards and picnic. A 50/50 split was held to benefit the this club.

Next year, if we do this again we would like to have a fish fry picnic & some volunteers to come out and take charge of cleaning & cooking these critters and we can do up some potatoes and have a real nice lunch. But we need volunteers.

A brown bullhead catfish caught in the Anacostia River in Washington DC.
Hold your bullhead like in the picture if your hand can wrap like the picture otherwise hold it by the lower lip.
Slide your hand over the dorsal fin like picture shows and avoid the fins you see in the picture on the sides. [See the fin under this guys thumb.] They can jab and hurt.
When lipping I wrap a rag or a glove around my thumb. The teeth feel like sandpaper.
Those little teeth can scrape you if it is a biggie.

Wilson Lions Club, Thank You!

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Bullhead contest - A little change
No live Fish Please

A visit Saturday from the Dec told me that transporting live fish from any body of water is not permitted-unless it is certified - so - we can not put live fish in the Conservation Clubs pond for the kids Fishing Derby because these Bullhead might be infected - also to put any bullhead back - it must be put back in the water it was taken -

Therefore - the extra 3 ounces for a live bullhead has be dropped - what the 2 fish weigh is what they weigh - please present your fish to the judges with out water, just like you were taking the fish home to eat - the DEC CAN ticket you if your fish are alive in water in your car --

There are 2 options of what to do with your entered Bullheads :

1. You can get the fish weighed and then put the fish in your can and take them home
2. If you do not want the Bullheads - we will find someone that will take your fish - they will take the fish home and eat

Sorry for the change – only where the Bullheads end up

The Dec officer was very cooperative - and even offer these suggestions of what to do with the fish
