New York’s Free Fishing Days 2004 

June 26-27 – No license is required by anyone for these two days, resident or non-resident (although all the rules and regulations must be followed), in an effort to promoted this popular pastime.  This is a great time to get the whole family on the water and see how much fun it can be.  This is also the weekend that the Town of Newfane sponsors a kids fishing derby at the Town of Newfane Marina in Olcott.  Set for June 26th, this popular kids derby will be held from 8 a.m. to noon.  For more information, call (716) 778-8531.


Lake Ontario Counties (LOC) Spring Trout and Salmon Derby

April 23-May 2, 2004 – This premier spring kick-off classic, offering a $10,000 Grand Prize for the largest trout or salmon caught overall, also sports over $30,000 in cash and prizes overall. Niagara County is still the place to be with more than 60 percent of the winners in the 2003 event coming from Niagara’s waters.  Cost is $25 for adults; $5 for kids in a special youth division.  Sign up for season pass for both spring and fall events for just $45.  Many of the local tackle shops are registration sites. Harbor Sports in Olcott; The Gas Shack in Wilson; and, Williams Marine in Youngstown are weigh stations.  For more information, call (888) REEL-2-IN or visit their website at www.loc.org.  

The 2004 Spring and Fall LOC Derbies will take place as scheduled and there will only be a few minor changes. Prize values will remain the same as last year.

Gander Mountain’s Lake Ontario Pro-Am Salmon Team Tournament

June 5-6, 2004 – Welcome Gander Mountain as a proud sponsor to this year’s event!  This prestigious fishing competition pits teams of anglers against one another using a unique scoring system over two days of fishing. Held out of the Niagara County ports of Wilson and Olcott, the local community also coordinates special events to make it a fun filled weekend.  Cost is $400 for professional teams; $200 for amateur teams.  Last year, more than $21,000 was paid out in cash prizes.  This year, that prize structure is already over $30,000 in cash, including a $10,000 first place for the pros; $5,000 first place for the amateurs.  For more info call (716) 439-7303 or log onto their website at www.lakeontarioproam.com for rules and sign up information.

Sen. John Daly Charity Memorial Bass Classic 
Scheduled for Fort Niagara along the banks of the Niagara River.  Details are still being worked out in raising money for Niagara Hospice and The Niagara Falls Boys and Girls Club Youth Camps.  A morning on the water with a local charter or guide with all the frills for $100 per person; $50 per child.  Awards and a cook-out and fish fry follows with beverages.  Much more!  For more info call (716) 434-2160, ask for Diane.  Visit Bass Classic Website for registration and details. August 7 2004 to August 22 2004 Sponsored by Orleans County Rotary Club. $15.00 entry fee and $3,000.00 Grand Prize! $7,400 in total cash prizes. Registrations available at most tackle shops. Derby covers Niagara, Orleans, and Monroe Counties west of the Genesee River

28th Annual Greater Niagara “Fall Classic” Derby – 2004: A Fish Odyssey September 18-26, 2004   
The journey continues with another great event set for 2004.
These dates are tentative so keep posted on area websites such as www.olcottfishing.com or www.niagarariveranglers.com.  Last year, over $25,000 in cash prizes were handed out to winning anglers with Scott Palmer’s 15.63 pound brown trout being drawn on awards night at the Holiday Inn to win the 2003 Geo Tracker from Fuccillo Chevrolet that was last year’s Grand Prize.  Other specie categories included salmon, rainbow trout, brown trout, smallmouth bass, sheepshead and walleye.  Look for carp to be back in 2004, too.  All have a chance to win the Grand Prize.  For more information, call (716) 439-7303.  


New York Power Authority’s Wildlife Festival

September 25-26, 2004 – A fun filled family event with lots of hands-on displays, live animals and shows.  Held at NYPA’s Visitor’s Center in Lewiston (adjacent to Niagara University), the 2003 event attracted nearly 15,000 people. For the Kids – Every year, there are numerous fishing competitions designed specifically for the kids.  For example, the LOC and Fish Odyssey derbies have youth components to them.  Check out the information above and find out the details for those respective competitions.  Here’s a few other youth competitions that are normally held every year:

·       June 26 – Town of Newfane Kids Derby at the Town of Newfane Marina, Olcott from 8 a.m. to noon.

·       June 19 – Wilson Kids Fishing Derby sponsored by the Wilson Conservation Club and area merchants.

·       June 13 – Niagara River Anglers Kids Derby @ Wilderness Preserve, Porter from 9 a.m. to noon.  Call Frank Campbell at 284-8546 for more information.
