IS THE
BLUE PIKE ~ EXTINCT?
Blue Pike. Where are they now?....... Did they just......disappear? There has been a lot said and a lot of studies and explanations, and it still baffles Fishermen. State and Federal Biologists are still trying to decide exactly what happened. The stories on these pages are not compilations from other websites, it is factual accounts from area anglers and others. "Blues" were once native in Lakes Erie and Ontario as well as a huge abundance in the Niagara River. The information and stories on these pages might just enlighten some of our visitors to what happened. There has been much research through the years by many on this subject and several stories on other websites. Our information was complied from area fishermen and USFWS Information as well as NYS Sea Grant Associates. There have been reports of blue pike being caught today but these fish are explained as being a "blue phase" of the yellow pike or walleye. There are many of these blue colored fish that are caught in Lake Erie and many more northern Canada lakes, notably Lake Nippissing in northern Ontario and the Ottawa River, on the Ontario/Quebec border.
