The Annual Roger Toby Memorial Niagara River Steelhead Contest held Saturday [2/16] was a big hit again this year. A total of 87 people signed and the fish cooperated for almost everybody. The day started out with calm winds and ended up pushing pretty good by noon time. Temperatures were bearable.

Captain Roy Larsen from North Tonawanda NY captured the big prize with a 14# 4oz. Steelie. Larsen was fishing with Captain John DeLorenzo. Both men are seasoned Niagara River Charter Captains. Captain Larsen also will have his winning fish mounted by Nature's Way Taxidermy, Sanborn NY.

Mike Sullivan from Tonawanda NY was the second place winner with a nice 12# 6 oz Steelhead.

Dan Coville from Orchard Park NY had and identical size fish weighed in at 12# 6 oz. but the tie was determined by time of entry. [Contest rule]

The $50.00 early bird drawing was won by Patrick LoDullo from Concord NY.

The 50/50 cash door prize was won by Roger Tobey's niece!

The river ice started clearing about Thursday and got better on Friday then Saturday by contest time the river was very much fishable.

The awards party followed at the Lewiston Fire Hall and there was lots of fun, food & beverages for all with draw prizes for attendees galore.

Chairman Richard Fortier was a proud man and proud of all that entered to fish. Fortier stands to be commended for another great contest again this year.

Instead of the 77 entries as reported earlier, there were 87 entries! One of the ticket outlets slipped up and forgot to phone the entries in to the Chairman. Everything was resolved with no problem..

There were only 3 Canadian entries this year. That was fewer numbers from previous years. St. Catherine's and Beamsville Ontario were represented.

There were just 22 fish entered while most were released as the word was out that you had to weigh in bigger than 11 pounds to be considered.
