\nLocal fishing is really starting to
\nramp up with the opening of the
\ninland trout and salmon season on
\nApril 1. Increased opportunities
\nbecome available throughout the
\nstate, spreading out the anglers and
\ngiving everyone a spot to cast. Even
\nsome inner city-type situations will
\nexist early in the season such as
\nHyde Park Lake, Gill Creek and
\nOppenheim Park Pond in Niagara
\nFalls. Be sure to mark April 5 on
\nyour calendar. Oppenheim Park Pond,
\nalong Niagara Falls Boulevard. in
\nWheatfield, will receive 100 browns
\nand 200 rainbows around 10 a.m. Hyde
\nPark Lake in Niagara Falls will
\nreceive 200 2-year-old browns and
\n1,650 yearlings at 11 a.m. In
\naddition, Gill Creek will be the
\nrecipient of 540 browns from Buffalo
\nAvenue upstream to the dam at the
\nlake.In Erie County, April 4 will see
\n2,800 yearling rainbows stocked in
\nCayuga Creek in Lancaster. On April
\n6, Sprague Brook Park Ponds A and B,
\nVeterans Pond and Foote Road Pond
\nwill receive over 700 browns and
\nrainbows. On April 7, Main Park Pond
\nwill get a dumping of 300 \u2018bows and
\nEllicott Creek in Amherst will
\nreceive 1,250 rainbows. Pre-April 1
\nstockings:Goose Creek in Chautauqua County
\n(Harmony and N. Harmony \u2013 870
\nyearling browns, 300 2-year old
\nbrowns and 1,050 yearling brook
\ntrout. Erie County stocking
\nlocations will be Cattaraugus Creek
\nin Saardina (3,140 yearling browns
\nand 600 two year old browns); East
\nBranch Cazenovia Creek at Aurora
\n(2,560 yearling browns and 300
\n2-year-old browns); Little Buffalo
\nCreek at Lancaster and Elma (1,070
\nyearling browns and 200 two year old
\nbrowns); Eighteenmile Creek in
\nBoston (620 yearling browns).In Wyoming County, stocking sites
\nare Buffalo Creek in Java (1,070
\nyearling browns, 200 2-year-old
\nbrowns and 400 brook trout);
\nCattaraugus Creek in Java (1,980
\nyearling browns and 600 2-year-old
\nbrowns); Little Tonawanda Creek at

Lake Erie and tributaries<\/p>\n

With an increased amount of rain in
\ncertain sections of the region,
\nyou\u2019ll need to keep an eye on the
\nweather forecast and do your best to
\navoid the wet stuff in some streams.
\nIf a stream is low and clear, look
\nto see where the rain will help
\nmatters along. Danny Colville with
\nColville Outfitters in Hamburg
\nhooked five steelhead on Eighteen
\nMile Tuesday morning. However, bass<\/a>
\nand suckers are starting to show up.
\nCanadaway is doing much better and
\nCayuga and Buffalo creeks are
\nfishing decent with some fresh
\nrunners in the system.<\/p>\n

Lake Ontario and tributaries<\/p>\n

Eighteen Mile Creek was flowing at
\n530 cfs coming out of the weekend
\nand it was down to 310 cfs at
\nmid-day Tuesday. It could be
\nfishable by the weekend. Water was
\nstained from Burt Dam to the piers.
\nThe east pier was totally ice-free
\nand the west pier was almost there.
\nCast spoons or spinners. You can
\nalso fish worms, minnows or egg sacs
\nunder a float. The same will work
\nover in Wilson. Best bet in the
\nstreams will be the smaller ones
\nlike Keg, Hopkins or 12 Mile. To the
\neast, Johnson Creek was starting to
\nclear up and so was the Oak.
\nBullhead are starting to hit in
\nWilson, just in time for the Wilson
\nConservation Club Bullhead
\nTournament April 7-9. Call Eric at

Niagara River<\/p>\n

Everyone is still talking about the
\nlunker 31-pound brown trout reeled
\nin by Bob Klemm of Pennsylvania
\nMonday morning along Fort Niagara!
\nHe was fishing with his brother Rich
\nfrom New Jersey and Capt. Frank
\nCampbell of Niagara Region Charters.
\nThe water was slightly off-color and
\nfishing was a little tough, but
\nboats were reporting a mixed bag of
\nsteelhead, browns, lake trout, bass
\nand walleye. Klemm was using a
\nspottail shiner, but egg sacs have
\nalso been working very well,
\nespecially pink. Shoreline casters
\nup in the gorge have been struggling
\na bit the past three or four days,
\nbut it should improve as waters
\nclear. The New York Power Authority
\nfishing platform, gorge stairs and
\nupper reservoir all open April 1.<\/p>\n

Chautauqua Lake<\/p>\n

Crappie action has started in the
\ncanals according to Mike Sperry at
\nChautauqua Reel Outdoors. Best times
\nare early morning and after dark.
\nEmerald shiners, tube jigs and small<\/a>
\nmarabou jigs fished under a float.
\nGood numbers of perch, too.<\/p>\n

Destination Niagara USA Fishing
\nForecast for March 30, 2017 <\/b><\/p>\n

The big news this week was the 31
\npound brown trout caught by Bob
\nKlemm of Pennsylvania fishing with
\nCapt. Frank Campbell of Niagara
\nRegion Charters. That\u2019s all we are
\ngoing to tell you this week because
\nit will be a feature in the Buffalo
\nNews next week on Thursday, April 6.
\nYou have to hear the whole story on

Lower Niagara River trout
\naction has been decent from both
\nboat and shore. Some days you have
\nto work a little more than others.
\nBest drifts have been Devil\u2019s Hole
\nand Artpark for rainbows and lake
\ntrout, but you should be able to
\nfind trout throughout the river
\nsystem. Egg sacs have been working
\nbest on the steelhead; minnows for
\nthe lake trout. Boat drifters are
\nusing 3-way rigs to bounce the
\nbottom. For browns, target down
\nriver closer to the lake with
\nminnows or shiners. From shore,
\ncasters are still using spoons,
\nspinners and egg sacs in the gorge
\nfrom Artpark to the Whirlpool. The
\nNew York Power Authority Fishing
\nPlatform in the Niagara Gorge, as
\nwell as the stairs leading down to
\nthe shoreline along the NYPA access
\nroad near Niagara University, will
\nbe open for business on April 1.
\nAlso on April 1, the NYPA reservoir
\nis also open for fishing. The NRAA
\nJohn Long, Sr. Memorial Raffle and
\nFeast is April 1 from 2 to 6 p.m. at
\nthe Niagara Active Hose on Lockport
\nRd. in Niagara Falls. Great eats!The weather forecasters are calling
\nfor some rain this Friday so that
\ncould put a damper on the stream
\naction off Lake Ontario. Burt Dam
\nand 18 Mile Creek is stained, but
\nthere is good flow. Silver steelies
\nare being caught but you do have to
\nwork for them. Jigs tipped with wax
\nworms or grubs will work as will
\nsmall floating stickbaits two to
\nthree inches long in rainbow color
\npatterns. There is no ice on the
\npiers any more so catching hardware
\nlike spoons and spinners is the way
\nto go. Minnows and worms will also
\nwork. Smaller creeks like Keg,
\nHopkins and both branches of 12 Mile
\nwere flowing nicely. Some bullheads
\nare being caught in Wilson, perfect
\ntiming. The Wilson Conservation Club
\nbullhead contest is set for April
\n7-9. Weigh in is held out of the
\nWilson Conservation Club, 2934
\nWilson Cambria Road (Route 425),
\nWilson. The tournament is based on
\nyour best two fish with the
\ntie-breaker being the overall length
\nof the two fish. Any Niagara County
\nwaters are eligible. Entry fee is
\n$10 for 13 years of age and older;
\nfree for junior anglers 12 and
\nunder. The fun contest actually
\nstarts at 5 p.m. on Friday and runs
\nuntil 1 p.m. on Sunday. All
\nweigh-ins will take place from 9
\na.m. to 1 p.m. at the Wilson club.

\nThey will ready the pens and get
\nthem in the water to prepare to

\nOppenheim Park Pond trout stockings
\nwill take place on April 5.
\nOppenheim Park Pond, along Niagara
\nFalls Blvd. in Wheatfield, will

\nLabor Day weekend and the nasty weather he had experienced some of his best
\nfishing of the year around Sturgeon Point, Myers Reef and Seneca Shoal. You
\ncould catch all the 14-15-inch smallmouth bass you wanted in 25 feet of water
\nor you could slide out a bit deeper \u2013 out to 45 feet \u2013 to catch some bigger
\nfish up to 5 pounds, six ounce for him. He had back to back days of 120 bass
\ncoming to the boat. Top bait was crayfish and Gulp green worms fished on a <\/span>drop

FRIDAY FEBRUARY 13 2009<\/span><\/b> <\/b>– We must preface this report with some sad
\nnews. One of the local giants in the sportfishing<\/span>
\nindustry passed away this week. Capt. Doug Stein<\/b> of Grand Island, a charter captain and guide
\nfor many years, died after a valiant bout with cancer. Doug was the president
\nof the Niagara River Anglers Assn. for nearly a decade, with one of his big
\ninitiatives being the first pen rearing project for salmon in the county. He
\nwas one of those guys willing to go out on a limb to support what he believed
\nin and always willing to help when work needed to be accomplished to help the
\nsportfishery<\/span> along. He was a big man with an even
\nbigger heart and I\u2019m proud to say that he was a friend of mine. We fished,
\nhunted and shot together and he will be sorely missed by many. Bill Hilts
\nJr.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n
