There were a total of
\n27,000 steelhead trout stocked in Twelve Mile Creek. 12,000 were stocked
\nin the west branch and 10,000 stocked in the east branch. In addition,
\n5,000 were stocked in the Town of Wilson rearing pens. Backed by the
\nTown and supervised by many volunteer residents, this program has proved
\nvery successful and as well as any other program like it on Lake
\nOntario\/Niagara River.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

The volunteers met the
\nDEC Truck that arrived at 12:45 PM from the Altmar NY Hatchery.
\nIt was quite cold and windy with a breeze from the east. Harbor water
\ntemp was around 42-44 degrees which was ideal.\u00a0 The fish didn’t
\nmind though.\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Charter Captain Mike Lis
\nhas taken the volunteer lead to organize and oversee the feeding
\nschedules by even more volunteers. Lis is also the lead communications
\nman with the DEC. NYS DEC Chief Biologist Mike Wilkinson is the contact
\nperson and he oversees all stocking efforts in the DEC Region 9.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Interesting note: As the fish
\nwere coming down the pipe to the pen, they wanted to stay in the pipe and were
\ntrying to swim upstream against the flow. As always, the water lying in the low
\nspots of the pipe had to be flushed out by raising the high end of the pipe even
\nhigher so they\u00a0 would all come out. The volunteers treat these fish as
\nthough they were family.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Lake Release on beach<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

When being released directly to
\nthe lake, many of these little guys, after being pushed out the pipe into the
\nlake, would\u00a0 actually swim back up the pipe despite the flow of water
\ncoming down. [see middle picture] The volunteers will stand the pipe upright so
\nthey are all forced out. It’s like a bunch of little kids looking back for their
\nmother on the beach to make sure it is OK to go in. They will swarm in groups at
\nthe lake edge until finally disappear from sight. Some even try to swim on the
\nsand like the photo on the right. Actually they get disoriented and eventually
\nfind their way back to the water where they know they will be safe.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/b>The guy in the background is Terry Swan, retired tackle dealer and
\nhe always volunteers his services to the betterment of the fishery.<\/span><\/td>\n		\"release
\n<\/a>Notice how after being released, these
\nlittle guys want to hang around the pipe where they came from. When the
\npipe is removed, in time they will meander off and out of sight<\/span><\/td>\n		\"beached
\n<\/a>Beached! This little fishy found his way
\naround in no time. His friends were all swimmin’ in the lake! He went
\nback and lived happily ever after.
\n<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
