A word about our Official Weigh-Master: Richard Fortier has been serving as weigh master/judge for many many years now and fishermen respect his honesty and integrity. There is never a question and when Richard decides, Richards word is gold is an important cog to the success of these events. All events are open to the public and spectators are invited to attend the weigh-ins at all events. C'mon and enjoy in the celebrations! |
Mr. Ken Sprenger |
Most of you remember Tonawanda News Outdoor Writer Ken Sprenger. [Also Lockport USJ] Sprenger was there Saturday and taking pictures for a new story he is working on about the extinct Blue Pike. Go to the Blue Pike pages on this website and there you will find an interesting story and history done by him about the Blue Pike a few years ago.
There is a lot of information on this
extinct species on our
Blue Pike pages. |
REPORT ON THE
WALLEYE CLASSIC III SEPTEMBER 18 2010
Great walleye weather in the early morning turning into a windy, gusty day later in the AM. There were 40 entrants and ONLY 5 fish turned in for weigh-in. Poor fishing for the most part but lots of reports of the salmon moving in and they could be seen at the red can and the Coast Guard drift surfacing and playing around. It was felt by the experts that the walleye were probably seeking cover for the day and in a bad mood. Size of the fish turned in was noticeably small compared to prior years entries. Andy Hastings [Grand Island NY] turned in total poundage of 6 lb. 12 oz for his two allowable fish. Enough to get him the first place bragging rights. One was 3lb.7oz. and the other was 3lb. 5 oz. Second place was Jason Hutcheson [Wilson NY] with a 5 lb. 11 oz. walleye and that also took the Lunker Award and bragging rights. He is a son of Ron Hutcheson. Jason was fishing with his brother Joe. Third place honors went to Pat Weis [Tonawanda NY] with a 3lb. 2oz. entry. The only other entry was Dave Ross and he had a 3lb. 0oz. entry. He was presented an Outdoors Niagara camouflage cap. Baits of the day appeared to be worm harness' or a spinner & sally fly tipped with a crawler. Among the participants this year, they were as far away as North East PA. [Down along route 20) St. Catherine’s Ontario and Bruce Mapel from Clarence NY. Grilled hot dogs as prepared by Jenine Hutchinson and Jerry and a macaroni salad by Delma Daul were served at the awards ceremony. Richard Fortier did another honorable job as weigh-master for the day. There was talk at the weigh-in about moving
the Classic IV to possibly the last weekend in August or maybe the
first weekend in September.

The Walleye Fish Tale:
Fishing was tough for this contest. High winds & waves on the bar in
front of the Fort. Seems the lures of
the day were copper colored blades; harness's [copper color] and
Sallys. A total 50 Fishermen entered and the furthest away was Fred Lockwood from Southburg Ct.
